Présentation
Objectives

The goal of the "Digital Transformation for Industry" course is to train specialists with a double background in complex systems engineering and computer science. The digital transformation is currently identified as a major issue and has been the subject of a French ministerial plan since 2018 led by the National Council of Industry.

This course brings the scientific and technological skills necessary to succeed, by accompanying it, the transition between the traditional methods of control of production lines and the new so-called intelligent methods. This transition can occur at two levels: at the level of the design of the production lines or at the level of the supervision of the latter. This involves the automation and instrumentation of the production line with smart sensors, and gather data to push them into enterprise information systems such as ERP or PLM. In this perspective, the course brings knowledge and skills in the organization of production, logistics, modeling, optimization, design and supervision of information systems, distributed computer systems and connected objects.
It also brings complements on other technologies considered as pillars of the industry of the future (sometimes also called industry 4.0) such as immersive technologies (virtual, mixed or augmented reality) or data analysis through artificial intelligence techniques.

Course Prerequisites

The targeted students are those who are interested in design, steering or operation (management), maintenance; in other words, man-made systems. The Digital Industry programme covers not only technical systems, but also more generally systems that are at once social, technical and economic, such as used in companies, business systems, information systems, and logistics systems backing the production lines. Students on this course may be aiming for a career in a company and wish to acquire broad-based expertise; or they may wish to embark on the research path (doctoral thesis); or they may use the course as an introduction to the research approach in order to think and act differently in business. Applications will be examined based not only on each student's previous record in terms of experience and academic results, but also, and most importantly, on the student's level of motivation regarding the aspects described above.

Broadly speaking, this concerns:

  • Students on undergraduate courses, in continuous education or on work-study programmes. - Students from a general science and technology background, or who hold a specialisation in one of the major disciplines of Complex Systems Engineering and industrial engineering (organisation and production management, quality management, computer engineering), and have completed 60 ECTS of a Master's degree.
  • Students who have completed a second year of engineering school in one of the afore-mentioned fields.
  • And any student whose previous training will be considered equivalent.

In all cases, student profiles must include:

  • Scientific and technological knowledge at Master's (Bac+4) level in Complex Systems Engineering.
  • The ability to speak English.
Skills
  • Align a digital business project with the user needs expressed.

  • Describe the behaviour of a complex system and identify its key parameters using appropriate modelling.

  • Build, design and develop an information system, in whole or in part, meeting the needs of the company.

  • Steer a digital transformation project in a company.

  • Identify the impacts of new technologies (artificial intelligence, IoT, virtual and augmented reality, etc.) on the business processes of the company.

  • Assess a digital solution in terms its adequacy in the performance of a continuous improvement process.

Post-graduate profile

Students graduate from this course as managers or researchers with a dual competence in:

  • engineering of complex systems, particularly production systems and complex social-technical systems;
  • IT, information systems and technologies related to some of the digital pillars of Industry 4.0: immersive realities, data analysis, system integration, cloud platforms and the Internet of Things.

This dual background enables graduates to liaise between the business section of the company and the IT or research and development departments, facilitating dialogue between them.

Career prospects

The targeted professions are: researcher, R&D engineer, consultant, methods engineer, quality manager, business engineer. Graduates can work across all branches of industry, particularly in the following privileged sectors: pharmaceuticals, transport (automotive, aeronautics or rail) and electronics. Lastly, the IT sector also affords a variety of job opportunities, particularly in the field of digital transformation management in industry and in companies.
