Learning outcome targets

The aims of the course are:
To enable graduates to use social science concepts, tools, methods and approaches and apply them to environmental and development issues.
With a particular focus on:
- Understanding the complexity of environmental and development issues (multi-stakeholder space), in particular through the ability to use bodies of knowledge from various disciplines (including outside the social sciences), or based on different relevant epistemic traditions; bringing together and leading stakeholders with divergent interests and encouraging the emergence of well-argued compromises, - Enabling the development of a professional practice which uses social sciences in a contextualized manner for environmental, social and economic issues.
- Training professionals in the field with the focus on the challenges of development across the whole country.
- Preparing students for doctoral studies by making them aware of the requirements in high-level international scientific research.
- Teaching students to appreciate the importance of the historical and social aspect of knowledge and its use for practical purposes and the importance of social demand in the production and circulation of knowledge.

Post-graduate profile

Graduates of the development and environmental studies programme master the concepts, instruments and tools used in the assessment and implementation of development policies and in the management of environmental issues. Depending on their choice of M2, they also have more specialised expertise in one of the targeted subject areas or cultural areas.

Transfer paths

The first year is intended to provide a broad-based foundation that allows all students to go on to study the M2 of their choice. However, students will be assisted in their selection of common core and optional teaching units, according to the goals they set at the start of M1. It is possible to transfer to another path at the end of M1, by issuing a request (with a cover letter) and attending an interview.

Prerequisites

Students wishing to join the "Development and Environmental Studies" field must have a solid foundation in the discipline and express a desire to work in an interdisciplinary situation. The teaching staff are looking for colleagues whose diversity is a source of enrichment. As the strong interdisciplinary requirements give rise to a fast pace of learning and an intensely diverse curriculum, only top quality applications will be considered. Applicants should demonstrate a deep understanding of developmental and environmental issues, with a commitment and an ethical posture that goes beyond simple cognitive skills, a clearly articulated motivation, and ideally some form of extra-curricular commitment in the field.

Skills required within the Field of Study :

  • Analyse contemporary issues to do with development and environmental issues through the use of analytical tools and operational approaches used in social science.

  • Implement the concepts and principles of policy and action aimed at development and environmental issues.

  • Carry out scientific research and organise research-related events.

  • Write a scientifically sound document to support the design and implementation of development and environmental projects, programmes and policies.

  • Integrate knowledge from different sources while respecting ethical deliberation.

  • Design a policy, a programme, a development and environmental project.
