Objectives

Master A. Spé is a graduate program in English studies and English for specific purposes jointly run by Ecole normale supérieure Paris-Saclay and Université Paris-Diderot. It prepares students for a career as university lecturers or professors in English studies.

Course Prerequisites

An excellent level of English is required. Applicants for the English for Specific Purposes Master must have followed the equivalent of an LLCER L3 (undergraduate course) in English in English-speaking studies (such as the "Classes Préparatoires" in literature for the French Grandes Écoles).

Skills
  • Have an in-depth understanding of the English language specialisation in all its aspects (lexical, discursive, grammatical, pedagogical or related to translation).

  • Fully master all the linguistic analysis frameworks of the English language, including phonetics and phonology.

  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of the literature, culture and civilization of the English-speaking world.

  • Be able to translate high-level literary texts from English to French and vice versa with great accuracy.

  • Learn scientific research methods in the field of English studies.

  • Develop an excellent level of spoken and written English.

Post-graduate profile

The main aim of the English for Specific Purposes Master is to prepare students for an academic career in the field of English-speaking studies, particularly specialised English, English-speaking cultures, English teaching or English linguistics.

  • Further studies at doctoral level; teaching and research in English-speaking studies (university lecturer positions).
  • Jobs as Associate Professors of English in Higher Education (PRAG).
