Présentation
Objectives

Master 2 FESup is a graduate teacher training program in English studies and ESP (English for specific purposes) run by Ecole normale supérieure Paris-Saclay, France. It prepares students for taking the "agrégation d'anglais", a highly selective national competitive examination administered by the French Ministry of National Education, while providing them with extensive, in-depth training in English linguistics (including phonetics and phonology), English literature, English and American history, advanced literary translation, English for specific purposes and didactics.

Course Prerequisites

Prerequisites related to mastering the English language: possess excellent expression and comprehension skills in spoken and written English upon entry into the course. Prerequisites related to previous studies: applicants must have obtained a qualification in advanced English-speaking studies (LLCER), and show proven excellence in the fields of literary analysis, English-speaking civilization and English linguistics (an essential factor). Prerequisites related to translation skills: in their previous studies, applicants must have demonstrated excellent capacities in the translation of original English literary texts and English versions of literary texts.

Skills
  • Possess excellent general knowledge of English-speaking civilizations;

  • Be able to produce detailed commentary and provide in-depth perspective on a literary text or an authentic document in the English language;

  • Be familiar with the various theoretical methods for interpreting English grammar, including the phonological aspects, and be able to classify the linguistic facets observed in authentic documents;

  • Be able to translate complex literary texts (originally in English and English versions) with rigour and accuracy;

  • Know the specificities of specialised English teaching and keep abreast of recent research developments in this area;

  • Be able to build and deliver a structured lesson by adapting it to the target audience, for instance by designing and implementing LANSAD (English language for specialists in other disciplines) teaching sequences.

Post-graduate profile
  • Continuation of studies (doctoral programme, doctoral contract);
  • PRAG (teacher training) in higher education (associate professors of English assigned to the LANSAD sector at tertiary level - in other words lecturers);
  • Secondary-school teachers;
  • Teachers of preparatory classes ("classes préparatoires" for the French Grandes Écoles).
Career prospects

The main aim of this Master is to prepare students for an academic career in the field of English-speaking studies, particularly English for specific purposes, English-speaking cultures, English teaching or English linguistics of English. Students are therefore advised to go on to doctoral studies at the end of the M2, thus entering the system of training in and through research: the system on which Ecole Normale programmes across all the departments of ENS Paris-Saclay are based. Furthermore, given that the FESup M2 course is coupled with preparation for external teacher-training exams in English – which the vast majority of students also follow during their studies at ENS Paris-Saclay, generally during the third year of studies –, PRAG (secondary school teachers with an "Agrégation" assigned to higher education) positions in the LANSAD sector also constitute a natural outlet for graduates (each year, over 200 jobs of this type are posted on the Galaxie site of the French Ministry of Higher Education).
