Présentation
Objectives

The goal of this programme is to deal with all the environmental, energy and food issues from an economics point of view (NB. despite the general name of the Master’s degree, transport economics is not studied as such, and no programme is specifically dedicated to it).

The disciplinary fields of the programme include:

- the key aspects of economics (microeconomics, macroeconomics);

- statistical and operational research methods (econometrics, microeconomics, time series, etc.);

- the basics of decision-making, including in an uncertain world;

- an introduction to environmental, energy, food and mobility economics (Master 2 specialisations);

- IT;

- cross-disciplinary optional courses (writing techniques, debates and controversies);

- extracurricular activities (organisation of the alumni association).

The students who followed a scientific or engineering curriculum will be able to take extra economics courses, while others will be able to take extra statistics or mathematics courses, depending on their needs.

The students will acquire and use multiple skill sets while learning integrated approaches to cover all the fields needed to address environment, energy and food issues.

Course Prerequisites

For an entry in M1, applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in economics (with advanced skills in microeconomics, mathematics, statistics); an undergraduate degree in mathematics, or mathematics and informatics applied to social sciences or management; or an undergraduate-level (Bac+3) qualification in science (physics, engineering, biology etc.) with a solid foundation in mathematics and statistics. A keen interest in environmental, energy or bio-economy issues is an important asset, as applicants who pass the first selection phase (based on their record) are interviewed about their motivation and skills.

Skills
  • Be able to put statistical and econometric tools into action to solve a complex problem.

  • Understand and be able to apply the concepts of economic theory to analyse the impacts of the energy transition and environmental transition.

  • Develop multi-criteria analysis methods in the development of strategic intervention choices.

  • Model and quantify an economic phenomenon (econometrics, operational research, simulation methods).

  • Understand the mechanisms and institutions at work in public policies and negotiation strategies.

Post-graduate profile

At the end of the programme, students are able to:
understand economic theory and apply it to decision making;
set up data processing, statistical and econometric methods as well as the necessary IT resources;
understand the political, economic and scientific issues related to the energy, environment and food sectors, be aware of recent developments in research in these fields,
implement managerial knowledge in specific situations (cost-benefits analyses, negotiations, decision-making in uncertain situations, management of controversies)
put cross-cutting disciplinary skills into play (writing techniques, communication, team-working ability)

Career prospects

The M1 is not intended to lead directly into employment. Most students continue their studies in one of the four M2 courses: "Energy economics" (50 students); "Economics of sustainable development and the environment" (35 students), "Prospective modeling: economy, environment, energy" (15 students); "Economics of sustainable food" (15 students). Some students may opt for an "entrepreneur" path in M1. Students may also choose to substitute the research laboratory internship with a business creation project.
