Présentation
Objectives

This study path is based on the science and health curriculum of the Biology-Health M1. All teaching units are grouped together in the M1 and organised into platforms (lists of teaching units to choose from), classified within five major scientific fields. The platforms recommended in M1 are:
-Genetics, molecular and cellular biology
-Physiology and physiopathology. The learning outcomes of the oncology course are to provide students with the skill-sets required for oncology. Oncology is a field of activity that requires a multitude of skills not only in biology and medicine but also in engineering and human sciences. Since this discipline is intrinsically multidisciplinary by nature, there is a demand for a continuous flow of experts in the various fields of knowledge involved. The oncology study path therefore recruits students from two main sources: (i) health professionals (mainly medical oncology interns upon completing their internship, as well as pharmacists and veterinarians) (ii) science students with a degree in BS. Moreover, this is a nationally and internationally renowned course, which therefore also recruits directly at M2 level: mainly doctors and scientists who have studied at other universities, and, on occasion, students from another academic fields, such as engineering for example.
The aim is to give this diverse range of students the means to actively participate in the advancement of knowledge and practices in the field of oncology. Separate teaching units will therefore be introduced at M2 level, proceeding from the work carried out at M1 level, that take scientists and health professionals in separate directions. More specifically, teaching units for doctors will focus on molecular and cellular biology, while scientists will be introduced to clinical aspects and the workings of hospitals.
The broad aim of the course is to impart an understanding of the process of tumour progression at molecular level. While considerable advances have been made over the last few years, new discoveries about tumour progression are steadily being made, forming a rapidly growing body of knowledge that requires streamlining. For this reason, the theoretical component of the Master's course stretches beyond an inventory of current knowledge, and largely involves learning the skills required to analyse and interpret experimental data. In addition, to properly understand the molecular mechanisms, tumour cells must be considered in their environment, taking into account the interactions with the body's various levels of regulation, such as the immune system. This course is completed at M2 level, culminating in a six-month research internship in a laboratory.
Several sub-courses are available for students who wish to focus on a particular aspect of oncology: (i) cellular and genetic biology for an understanding of biological mechanisms; (ii) pharmacology and therapy for therapeutic actions; (iii) radiobiology for radiotherapy mechanisms and their implementation as part of combined strategies.

Career prospects

Due to its fundamentally multidisciplinary nature and the importance of the societal issues it addresses, oncology has become a kind of laboratory for implementing the latest scientific advances in a hospital context. However, such experimentation rests not only on the work of health professionals but also on that of a wide range of experts. The aim of the oncology course is to prepare students to take part in this process, whether as scientists or as health professionals. While the majority of graduates follow up the Master's course with a doctoral degree, there are also job opportunities at Master's level. These, however, are only available to a few students per year due to considerable fluctuations in recruitment among the French companies operating in this sector.
