Présentation
Objectives

The European Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree Bioceb aims at providing top-level and up-to-date education in chemical and biological engineering applied to the design and development of bio-based products and processes. The objective is to provide all students with a solid multidisciplinary scientific background in biology, chemistry and biotetechnology, combined with a good knowledge of bio-based products markets, and value-chain sustainability assessement. Bioceb aims at training student to systemic approaches at different scales, from the biological cell to macroeconomic systems. The programme is built-up arround three key pedagological pillars: an academic programme (lecture and practice), a green-line multidisciplinary project carried out over the 2 years, and an internship. Bioceb have ambition to favor the graduates insertion in the professional world, through a cross-cutting approach related to innovation, entrepreneurship and dissemination. Thanks to Bioceb modular format, each student is given the opportunity to build-up his/her specific curriculum with a specialization in one major field of biotechnologies, among bioprocesses design and up-scaling, biomass engineering and valorisation, bioproducts design and production. In the framework of Bioceb programme, the Biomass Engineering for Bioeconomy (BEB) track organised by AgroParisTech whithin the Integrative and Predictive Biology Master consists in a multi-disciplinary training providing :
in M1: knowledge on agro-ressources and biorefinery combined with skills in value chain sustainability assessment and economics
in M2: in-depth knowledge of plant biochemical diversity (in particular through secondary metabolites) and of the biotechnological tools (genetic modification, synthetic biology, innovative extraction strategies according to green chemistry principles) supporting innovation in bioeconomy. Besides the theoretical and experimental training in this scientific fields, the programme includes a course on bioeconomy and innovation to train the students to industry-driven approaches.

Course Prerequisites
The Master Bioceb is an two year EMJMD (M1+M2). Consequently, the students applying for the M1, engage themselves to follow the M2. This Master comprises the track "Biomass Engineering for Bioeconomy"(BEB) of the University Paris-Saclay national Master BIP. The admission requirements for the BIOCEB EMJMD are the following : - BSc degree or equivalent degree of at least 180 ECTS in Engineering or Science including a strong background in at least one discipline related to Biology : Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biophysics, Bioprocess engineering, Molecular biology - Preferred but non-mandatory : a complementary background in Chemistry, Physics or Environmental sciences - Proven good level in Mathematics - Proven very good English level (equivalent to minimum B2) The candidates are selected according the excellence of their background and academic results as well as their motivation (professional project). The M2 of the track BEB is open to students involved in the University Paris-Saclay national Master BIP.
Skills
  • To combine different disciplines in order to design new sustainable routes for the valorization of agro-resources or industrial waste.

  • To carry out experiments in a scientific research approach for bioeconomy-related projects.

  • To practice project engineering with knowledge of innovation processes and of the different stages leading to industrialization from laboratory research.

  • To interact within a group and exploit the diversity of skills to carry out a project.

  • To communicate scientific results.

  • To discuss with people from different culture and take into account social and ethical expectations.

Career prospects

BIOCEB Master offers International career perspectives in research and development, innovation management or knowledge transfert, in the field of bioeconomy. Depending on their specific curriculum, the graduates will have the possibility to deal with biomass production, conversion process, bio-based products or with whole value-chains related projects. Graduates' careers cover a large panel of profesional sectors in private and public institutions worldwide. Five possible international tracks are offered to the students through the semester 1 and semester 2 options. These five tracks have been designed so as to address specific needs of the job market in bioeconomy, with the following management and scientific activities:

Track 1: Bioproducts, green chemistry, biomass engineering: production of tailored plants and microorganisms to increase the sustainability of the value chains (adaptation of plant to climate change, preservation of biodiversity and food resources, etc.)
Track 2: Bioproducts, green chemistry, bioprocesses: design, optimization and up-scaling of processes for the production of bio-based molecules, combining fermentation and chemistry and taking into account the principle of green chemistry (in particular waste reduction)
Track 3: Bioproducts, green chemistry, materials, polymers: design and development of bioproducts and biomaterials in particular biodegradable materials, and exploiting the diversity of new structures
Track 4: Agro-resources, value-chain assessment, bioprocesses: design of new sustainable value chains and processes involving flexible multi-resources and multi-products biorefineries
Track 5: Agro-resources, value-chain assessment, materials, polymers: design of new sustainable value chains and products for bio-based materials, to substitute fossil-based solutions and create new products
