Discussion group: the valorisation of human urine in agriculture?

Are you a user of the Plateau de Saclay? You wish to participate in the elaboration of a solution for the ecological transition of the territory? The association Terre & Cité, the Etablissement public d'aménagement de Paris-Saclay and their partners (Urocyclus project...) are pleased to invite you to a discussion group on the possibilities of recovery of human urine in agriculture on Monday, May 30, starting at 6:00 pm on the campus of ENS Paris Saclay.

The principle of reusing human excreta is old and several countries, such as Switzerland and Sweden, have been working since the 1990s to implement this principle by developing new techniques. In France, sewage treatment has become the main method of wastewater treatment. Urine accounts for 1% of the volume of wastewater and contains 80% of the nitrogen and 50% of the phosphorus that are essential for plant growth. The challenges of urine recovery are multiple: less water consumption, less energy consumption in treatment plants, less discharge of nitrogenous pollutants into waterways and less dependence on chemical fertilizers.

As an agri-urban territory, the Plateau de Saclay is a favorable environment for the recirculation of the food/excretion system and hosts numerous initiatives on the subject. This exchange will be an opportunity to present the various projects underway on the territory and their first results, particularly on the fertilizing effect of urine as nitrogen fertilizer and on the socio-technical acceptability of such a process.

Participation is free of charge and registration is required via the following link.
