Centre Pompidou is currently building a new conservation and creation centre in the Île-de-France region: the Centre Pompidou Francilien – Fabrique de l’Art/Musée national Picasso-Paris. The new space, which is expected to open in the summer of 2026, will combine a heritage mission for the conservation and management of artwork, with an objective to be a rich cultural space, open to its local area and beyond.

The Centre Pompidou Francilien was thought of as a hybrid project – a professional space for conservation, research and technical and scientific expertise, and also a cultural space, giving the public new access to modern art and contemporary creations. This twofold objective led to Massy being chosen as the centre’s final location, from among nine other candidate sites.

With a total surface area of 30,000 m2, the Centre Pompidou Francilien was thought of as an art manufacturer, (fabrique de l’art in French); both a centre of excellence for the conservation, restoration and display of works from the collections of the Musée national d’art moderne and the Musée national Picasso-Paris, and a new space for cultural dissemination and creation which is deeply committed and linked to its local area.

The location in the Essonne area will mean that the centre will benefit from the scientific and technical expertise of Université Paris-Saclay and its research laboratories working in preventive conservation. Collaborative projects are already in place between museum staff and the university’s researchers, as well as other initiatives linked to teaching and scientific and cultural outreach.

The new space will house exhibitions, workshops, meetings, shows, projections and performances. Its inclusive and multidisciplinary programme will give audiences in the Ile de France region the chance to become active participants in their experience of art and discover numerous unique and original artistic approaches. With over 140,000 works from the Centre Pompidou, 10,000 works from the Musée national Picasso-Paris and the participation of numerous conservation, restoration and outreach specialists, the Centre Pompidou Francilien will provide exciting new possibilities bringing art and the public together.
