Talents Article published on 04 May 2023 , Updated on 15 January 2024

Gabriel Zucman is a French economist, 2009 graduate of ENS Paris-Saclay and doctor in economics at EHESS - École des hautes études en sciences sociales. He has been awarded the 2023 John Bates Clark medal by the American Economic Association (AEA). This prestigious award recognises American or US-based economists under the age of 40.

Gabriel Zucman has been an Associate Professor at the University of California, Berkeley since 2019. His research focuses on tax evasion, high-income taxation and social inequalities. Using new calculation and data methods, Gabriel Zucman has estimated that the richest 0.01% of households evade about 25% of their taxes, demonstrating the extent of tax evasion around the world. In his work he has also estimated that 36% of multinational profits globally are shifted to tax havens; a trend which appears to be greater in the United States than in other countries.
