Materials Science and Engineering

In order to apply to one of the programmes of the master, please select the programme you are interested in under the "Year 1 & 2 Master's programmes" tab.

Présentation
Learning outcome targets

The aim of the degree is to educate future managers in the field of materials in an industrial or academic environment.
The scientific field in terms of acquired knowledge requires expertise in:
- the relationship of the structural properties of different types of materials
- simple and advanced characterisation tools, with strong practical support from teaching and research platforms
-  techniques and tools for shaping materials including advanced techniques such as metal additive manufacturing
- digital tools applied to materials
- industrial project management and project management tools

The targeted career pathways are management positions with a bac+5 in industrial or academic sectors for positions as process engineers, quality engineers, project engineers focused on materials processing, etc., but also for thesis work in research and development or academic research.

Two types of training are offered:
i) an initial training with the following typical courses:
MatNum: in silico design of materials through digital sciences
Functional Materials and Applications

ii) in work-linked apprenticeship training with two typical pathways:
Advanced Materials and Additives - Industrial Management
Thin Film Materials and Surfaces - Industrial Management

The skills acquired through initial training or apprenticeships provide the fundamentals to be able to integrate and adapt effectively to changes in professions which use materials in the context of a digital factory or collaborative research.

Post-graduate profile

Graduates of the Materials Science and Engineering specialisation can access Master's (Bac+5) level management professions that require competence in the field of materials combied with the ability to adapt to the sector's rapid pace of change (incorporating continuous developments in digital technology, new techniques for shaping materials such as additive manufacturing, etc.).
The skills acquired can be structured as a triangle: Knowledge <=> Competences <=> Sharing knowledge <=> Interpersonal skills: all of which provides graduates with the capacity to adapt to the rapid changes in the sector and its professions.

Transfer paths

(i) In the first part of the course, transfer paths are available at the end of the M1 year:
The M2 courses of this discipline are accessible to M1 students from outside the discipline who have a physics or chemistry background (strongly featuring solid-state physics or chemistry).
It is also possible to go on to M2 courses in this discipline at other institutions than Paris-Saclay

(ii) For apprenticeship training:
Apprenticeship training takes place under a two-year employment contract (M1+M2). Two paths are available at the end of M1 (Advanced materials, industrial management; Materials in thin layers and surfaces, industrial management). It is possible to join these two paths via apprenticeship in M2.
