International Double Degree in Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property Law (IAPI)

The IAPI double degree trains jurists to address the legal challenges arising from artificial intelligence, digital technologies and intellectual property in a comparative and international perspective. Graduates are awarded both the Master 2 (Université Paris-Saclay) and the LL.M. degree (UQAM).

The international double degree in Artificial Intelligence Law and Intellectual Property (IAPI) provides a critical and comparative training in intellectual property law, digital law, and the regulation of emerging technologies.

The first year, at Université Paris-Saclay, enables students to acquire solid theoretical foundations and an advanced methodology in legal analysis, complemented by additional training in Intellectual Property and Digital Law (PIDN).
The second year, completed at UQAM (Canada) within the PIDAN program, offers advanced theoretical and practical specialization in intellectual property, digital business law and artificial intelligence.

Upon completion of the program, students are awarded a double degree:

  • the Master of Laws (LL.M.) conferred by UQAM, and
  • the Master 2 from Université Paris-Saclay.

Information

Présentation

Skills

The program enables students to acquire an in-depth, comparative understanding of multiple legal systems, particularly the European and Canadian frameworks, with additional exposure to the American legal context. Through a full year of international mobility, it trains globally oriented jurists capable of evolving within transnational legal environments and engaging with diverse regulatory approaches in the fields of digital law and artificial intelligence.

The program also fosters legal creativity, encouraging students to use the tools of general law to design innovative solutions to the challenges arising from rapidly evolving technologies and digital practices. It combines a strong theoretical foundation with a practice-oriented approach, supported by professional learning methods such as negotiation simulations, mock deliberations, moot courts, legal writing exercises, case studies and specialized publications.

Finally, the curriculum includes a professional internship as well as the completion of a research dissertation — rather than a simple internship report — which familiarizes students with the level of methodological rigor required in legal professions and demonstrates to future employers their advanced analytical, research and legal writing abilities.

Objectives

First Year

The first year aims to provide students with a solid theoretical foundation and a critical legal methodology, aligned with one of the three proposed areas of specialization: international law, law and society, or labor law. It also includes a complementary training module in Intellectual Property and Digital Law (PIDN), designed to ensure the acquisition of cross-cutting knowledge necessary for understanding the legal challenges associated with intangible assets and emerging technologies.

Second Year

The second year focuses on deepening both theoretical and practical knowledge in intellectual property law, digital law, and the legal regulation of artificial intelligence. It is part of the “Intellectual Property and Digital Business Law” (PIDAN) program offered at UQAM, and aims to strengthen students’ analytical, research, and problem-solving skills within an international legal environment shaped by technological innovation.
