Présentation
Objectives

The aim of this Master's specialisation (uniting university lecturers and researchers from UPS-Pharmacie, AgroParisTech, UPS-Sciences, Evry) is, broadly, to provide students with scientific training based on learning the methodologies of experimental research and, more specifically, to provide them with the tools required to implement the analytical sciences approach when engaging in the study of complex phenomena and environments (living environments, agri-food and biological matrices, natural environments).
The specialisation draws on a set of research laboratories under the Paris-Saclay scope with university lecturers whose varied range of specialisations cover a wide field of analytical techniques (PIR spectrometry, MIR, molecular fluorescence, mass spectrometry, NMR, chromatography couplings) and applications (pharmacy, toxicology, environmental biology, molecular materials, etc.). Particular emphasis is placed on chemometric methods (interpretation of signals and analytical data, integration of multi-technical information, imaging), thus distinguishing this programme from concurrent programmes in analytical chemistry.
Straddling chemistry, pharmacy and biology, this specialisation provides integrated training in Analytical Chemistry, Chemometrics, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Integrative Biology and Toxicology.
Learning outcomes:
To provide students with scientific and strategic skills required to become good research project managers
To give potential candidates the training to qualify for thesis grants
To pave the way to employment in industrial R&D services

Course Prerequisites

To be admitted to the RDSA M2, students must have completed a level of studies at least equivalent to: - M1 route specialising in Analytical Chemistry, or
- Under certain conditions, 5th year of Pharmacy studies in France or a European Union country, or
- Chemical engineers graduated in France or a European Union country, or
- Under certain conditions, students admitted to the 3rd year of an engineering school
- AgroParisTech students admitted to the 2nd year can directly access the M2
- Students from countries outside the European Union must put together a file which will be examined by a VAA equivalence commission. Access to M2 is also open in continuous education; validation of M1 skills is then obtained by VAE (validation of prior experience).

Skills
  • Understand the principles of a measurement, its capabilities and limits; to know techniques for validating analytical methods.

  • Carry out a project and conduct a scientific study by elaborating a specifications sheet, a work schedule and a financing plan.

  • Optimise experiment schedules and data processing via chemometric methods: apply the study of phenomena to complex matrices.

  • Be proficient in the use of IT tools for analytical imaging and the management of the data involved.

  • Optimise experiment schedules and data processing via chemometric methods: apply the study of phenomena to complex matrices.

  • Communicate information and results to different audiences through the ability to describe a protocol and structure results.

Post-graduate profile

The holder of this qualification has the skills to:
- Manage a study project concerning the analysis of complex phenomena and environments (living environments, agri-food and biological matrices, natural environments),
- Develop an analysis strategy and apply chemometrics methods,
- Conduct an experiment protocol,
- Interpret, use and validate the results of analyses,
- Write a summary report describing the experiments carried out, the methods applied, specifying their field of validity, and the results obtained, using the appropriate computer tools to communicate the results to experts or clients.
- Provide training by transferring knowledge and skills.
Holders of this Master's degree take part in research activities. Students implement an analytical approach, carry out or direct studies by applying chemometrics methods (designing experiment, interpreting signals and analytical data, integrating multi-technical information, using "omics" tools, imaging, modeling).

Career prospects

Holders of this qualification are highly trained in chemistry and have in-depth scientific knowledge of analytical sciences and the latest strategic data processing and modeling methods.
They are prepared to apply for doctoral programmes and obtain thesis funding.
The programme is intended to enable students to step into any sector analytical chemistry, private or public; to exercise functions such as research and development engineer; or to become research project managers in the fields of pharmacy, biology, food or the environment.
As managers, they are at the junction between technicians and the hierarchy, and may be called upon to direct and supervise teams of technicians to coordinate the analytical strategies drawn up for the realisation of projects.
