Preparing for a Career in Organic Chemistry Research
Organic chemistry lies at the heart of recent advances across numerous fields: health, cosmetics, textiles, aerospace, agriculture, and the establishment of new environmental standards. All of these breakthroughs are built upon dynamic and inventive academic and industrial research. The "Organic Chemistry" M2R program is designed for students seeking to acquire advanced theoretical and practical skills, ranging from mastery of the latest methodological developments in organic synthesis to a broad understanding of its applications, aimed at addressing economic and societal challenges.
The M2 in Organic Chemistry is structured around three competency blocks, each composed of a specific number of Teaching Units (UE).
- Competency Block 1: 5 UEs, 6 ECTS each, totaling 30 ECTS
- Competency Block 2: 1 UE of 6 ECTS and 2 UEs of 2 ECTS each, totaling 10 ECTS
- Competency Block 3: 1 internship UE, 20 ECTS
Information
Skills
Preparing for a career as a researcher in fields requiring expertise in organic chemistry
- Gather and analyze information on a scientific issue by efficiently using research tools and databases, particularly bibliographic resources.
- Develop a strategy to isolate, identify, design, and analyze new molecules or new synthetic routes to molecules of interest.
- Apply a scientific approach in organic chemistry by establishing a work plan and organizing time effectively to achieve set objectives.
- Work in compliance with hygiene and safety regulations, with knowledge of standards and best laboratory practices.
- Communicate information and results to different audiences, being able to describe a protocol clearly and present results in a structured manner.
Objectives
The Organic Chemistry track trains students in both fundamental and applied research. It offers numerous advantages that provide an exceptional immersion into the contemporary world of Organic Chemistry research:
- Geographical proximity to the teaching team and host laboratories,
- Dynamism and excellence of the research conducted in affiliated laboratories and companies.
This environment allows each student to gain the necessary experience and perspective on the research profession, helping them to consolidate their career project and confirm their choice of a first professional research experience through a doctoral thesis.
Beyond acquiring high-level theoretical knowledge and experimental skills, this program enables each student to develop autonomy and critical thinking (through bibliographic and analytical projects linked to the internship) and to learn how to manage a project within a collaborative framework (through collective work on publications in English and participation in shared Teaching Units with other M2 tracks).
Acquiring this comprehensive set of skills represents a significant asset, placing students in the Paris-Saclay M2R in Organic Chemistry in an excellent position when applying for doctoral thesis funding.
