ORCID, a central ID
What is ORCID?
ORCID – Open research and contributor identifier- is a non-profit organisation supported by Université Paris-Saclay that assigns a unique, individual and permanent ID to authors of scientific publications.
Creation of an ORCID persistent identifier is voluntary, free of charge and takes less than a minute. About 10 million researchers worldwide now have an ORCID and more than 1,000 institutions use it. If you do not yet have an ORCID identifier, click on this link to create on
New : you can now enter your ORCID iD in Adonis. This integration will support the development of future services for researchers.
What is an ORCID identifier used for?
- To identify you and distinguish you from any namesakes
- To facilitate interactions with publishers, funding bodies, institutions, open archives and data repositories.
- Automatically bring your publications together in one place and give them greater visibility.
- You retain control over your digital identity by choosing which information you wish to make public or keep private. Furthermore, your identifier follows you throughout your career and across all your academic activities, even if you change institutions or your name.
Tips for optimizing your ORCID account:
1. Update your career history and biographical information, and opt for the “green” public setting
2. It is recommended that you keep your email address hidden for security reasons
3. Create two separate entries in the “Employment” section:
• One entry for your employer institution, for example: “Université Paris-Saclay” (name in French)
• One entry for your research unit
• Hospital-based researchers may also indicate the hospital with which they are affiliated
4. Adding links to your lab’s page, your resume, or your social media accounts boosts your visibility
5. Add all variations of your name (in the “Section Name” field, under “Also Known As”)
6. Link your ORCID to major databases to automatically import your publications
7. Link your ORCID to HAL so that your publications deposited in HAL are included in your ORCID profile. See the CCSD guidance sheet [PDF]
