QS World University Rankings by Subject: Université Paris-Saclay in the global top 50 for six subjects

The results of the 2023 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject were released on 22 March 2023. Université Paris-Saclay appeared in the top 20 universities in the world for Mathematics (16th) and Physics & Astronomy (17th), and in the top 50 for an additional four subjects.

Every year, the British company, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), publishes its World University Rankings by Subject. The ranking analyses institutions across 54 subjects in five broad subject areas: Natural Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Social Sciences & Management, and Arts & Humanities.

Université Paris-Saclay demonstrated strong progress in the five broad subject areas, appearing in the top 20 for Natural Sciences at rank 19 (20th in 2022), and in the top 50 for Engineering &Technology at rank 22 (26th in 2022).

The university was also among the world’s top 50 universities for six subjects, including the top 20 for Mathematics and Physics & Astronomy:

  • 16th in the world (4th in France) for Mathematics (19th in 2022)
  • 17th in the world (1st in France) for Physics & Astronomy (30th in 2022)
  • 26th in the world (1st in France) for Agriculture & Forestry (35th in 2022)
  • 27th in the world (1st in France) for Engineering – Electrical & Electronics (36th in 2022)
  • 41st in the world (4th in France) for Statistics & Operational Research (36th in 2022)
  • 41st in the world (2nd in France) for Computer Science & Information Systems (46th in 2022)

Université Paris-Saclay also made significant progress in comparison with its performance in 2022 in other subjects, appearing in the global top 100 for four additional subjects:

  • 55th in the world (1st in France) for Pharmacy & Pharmacology (89th in 2022)
  • 59th in the world (1st in France) for Materials Science (93rd in 2022)
  • 77th in the world (3rd in France) for Chemistry (112th in 2022)
  • 85th in the world (4th in France) for Biological Sciences (87th in 2022)

The ranking also assessed Université Paris-Saclay as a comprehensive research institution and its performance in social sciences, ranking the university 101-150th for Law (151-200th in 2022) and 151-200th for Economics & Econometrics (= in 2022). The University also maintained its ranking at 101-150th for Medicine, ranking 102nd in the broad subject area, Life Sciences & Medicine.
