France Universités Press Release on the immigration bill proposed by Les Républicains (LR)

University Article published on 07 June 2023 , Updated on 27 June 2023

Université Paris-Saclay joins France Universités in sharing its concern about the immigration bill put forward by the Les Républicains (LR) senators on 1 June 2023 in the French Senate, as well as the constitutional bill tabled by the LR and affiliated groups in the French National Assembly on 5 June 2023.

Several of the measures put forward would affect our international students: an increase in tuition fees for non-European Union students, the creation of a ‘return guarantee’ and increased checks on the ‘real and serious nature’ of studies undertaken by foreign nationals.

France Universités and the Conference of Deans of French Schools of Engineering (Conférence des directeurs des écoles françaises d’ingénieurs – CDEFI) were not consulted during the drafting of these proposed measures. They reflect an absolute lack of consideration for international students, as well as a total lack of confidence in the higher education and research system.

University Presidents and Deans reiterate their commitment to France’s tradition of openness and hospitability toward international students and the shared objective of ensuring the best possible study conditions for international students in French higher education establishments.
