Présentation
Objectives

The Design and System Sciences (DSS) course trains students, through research and for research, in the field of engineering and management of complex systems design (design engineering & management, system engineering). The overall aim is twofold: on the one hand, students learn the methodology required to specify, innovate, and dimension a complex technical system whilst guaranteeing its performance in technical terms and for usage. On the other hand, students are involved in designing and improving the performance of the industrial process of design, and of validation & verification, in companies that produce goods and services. The programme teaches the appropriate methods and processes for handling cost control and the technical and organisational specificities of multidisciplinary and collaborative design-validation. Lastly, students learn about the innovation processes that connect research projects to development projects, along with the management techniques for these processes.

The programme covers:

  • System engineering and deployment of product parameters, concurrent engineering, collaborative design, product-process design, virtual model or pre-project CAD, product configuration, product platforms.
  • Assessment of objective and subjective needs.
  • Identification of performance models, representation of design spaces and optimal solution spaces, optimisation and multi-criteria comparison/evaluation of products.
  • Product evaluation throughout the design project and performance monitoring, costs and risks.
  • Management of company knowledge, project briefs, feedback.
  • Sustainable development and eco-design.
  • Management of innovation, management of innovative organisations.
  • Management of development projects, people, objectives, resources.
  • Durable and reliable design, inclusive or universal design, lean product design.

Skills
  • Be able to model and simulate the behaviour of a complex system.

  • Be able to conceive and manage the design of a complex system.

  • Be able to identify and characterise problems relating to complex systems.

  • Be able to identify ways to improve the functioning of complex systems.

  • Be able to work in a team and collaborate in an international environment.

Career prospects

The course trains both students aiming for an academic career and engineers aiming for a career in business. Some of the students steer their studies towards a thesis. Job openings, either directly after the Master's programme or following a PhD, include positions such as project manager for new product development / industrialisation / purchasing / innovation; consultant for engineering and industrial organisation; Research and Development in system engineering and industrial engineering. The main sectors of activity concerned are the aeronautics, automotive, rail and naval industries, the luxury industry, the process industry, the chemical industry, energy, and community services.
