Objectives

The programme aims to train high-level specialists in continental natural water resources, surface-water hydrology and hydrogeology. At the end of the programme, students will have acquired skills that they will use in the private or public sector to take action and address different issues:

- problems of water resources;

- exploitation of aquifers;

- protection of hydric resources;

- soil and water quality;

- pollution and depollution of waters;

- management of catchment basins.

It is a research and vocational programme, training students in:
- surface-water hydrology
- hydrogeology (saturated and non-saturated zones)
- geochemistry
- hydrogeophysics
Courses are taught in classrooms, in the field and in laboratories or companies. They include a large proportion of individual and group projects. The programme is based both on fundamental knowledge of the targeted fields and on operational knowledge necessary for the practice of the targeted professions: field observations and measurements, spatial and temporal data processing methods and numerical modelling (in hydrology, hydrogeology and geochemistry).

It is also possible to follow options in geosciences, environmental law, environmental sciences and corporate business in Master 1.

Course Prerequisites

Applicants are selected based on (1) Qualifications already acquired, which must demonstrate a solid foundation in earth sciences, hydrology and geochemistry, (2) Excellent results, (3) High level of motivation, and, if possible, (4) Practical laboratory or company experience in the field.

Skills
  • Acquire, hone and use specialised scientific knowledge and skills in the fields of water sciences (hydrology, hydrogeology, hydrogeochemistry and hydrogeophysics).

  • Carry out a complete scientific, theoretical or experimental process from start to finish, applied to the analysis of various problems in hydrological systems.

  • Summarise and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in French and English, in a manner adapted to the target audience.

  • Learn and act in an independent manner

  • Work as a team and collaborate to achieve common goals.

  • Demonstrate critical analysis and scientific rigour

Post-graduate profile

The students will be able to enter employment as engineers, in the public or private sector, in the fields of hydrology, hydrogeology, and polluted sites and grounds. They will also be able to follow up their studies with a doctoral programme.

Career prospects

There are two types of path open to graduates: a thesis (50 %) and placement in a company or local bodies (50 %) at the end of the Master's.
Targeted fields of activity (public or private sector): Technical consulting offices (environment, hydrogeology, hydrology, polluted sites and soils, natural resources, geosciences), local and regional bodies, laboratories or research organisations, environmental NGOs, associations.
Types of jobs available at Master's (Bac+5) level and/or PhD (Bac+8) level: Engineer, Project manager / Study manager / Project manager, Researcher / teaching professor, Expert consultant

Programme

La formation du 1er semestre est dédiée aux enseignements fondamentaux et approfondis de l'hydrologie et de l'hydrogéologie. Elle aborde le fonctionnement de toutes les composantes du cycle de l'eau continentale (eaux de surface, eaux souterraines) et apporte à l'étudiant les fondamentaux du fonctionnement physique et géochimique des hydrosystèmes (hydrogéologie, hydrologie, géochimie, hydrogéophysique) nécessaires tant pour une insertion professionnelle à l'issue du Master que pour une poursuite en Doctorat. Les outils du domaine (modélisation, géophysique, géochimie, traitement de données) sont apportés au cours de ce semestre.

La formation du 2nd semestre est principalement dédiée au stage individuel que l'étudiant réalise dans le privé (entreprise, bureau d'étude, association, syndicat des eaux,...) ou dans le public (laboratoire de recherche, collectivité). Au cours de ce semestre, sont rassemblés les enseignements pratiques et opérationnels (salle sur PC, laboratoire d'analyse et terrain). Le travail d'études de cas et en stage de terrain permet à l'étudiant de réaliser, en petites équipes, des synthèses pluridisciplinaires sur des thématiques liés aux sciences de l'eau.
