Présentation
Objectives

The 2 main objectives are:
• to provide in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of plant biochemical diversity and of the biotechnological tools (genetic modification, synthetic biology, innovative extraction strategies according to green chemistry principles) supporting innovation in the bioeconomy;
• to train students to implement industry-driven approaches for innovation in the bioeconomy.

Skills
  • To combine different disciplines in order to design new sustainable routes for the valorization of agro-resources or industrial waste.

  • Overall organisation

    The program comprises 5 mandatory courses, 1 elective course to be chosen among 2 courses, and 1 MSc thesis internship. Teamwork and experimental training are 2 pillars of the pedagogy.

    Career prospects

    Bioceb offers International career perspectives in research and development, innovation management or knowledge transfert, in the field of bioeconomy. Depending on their specific curriculum, the graduates will have the possibility to deal with biomass production, conversion process, bio-based products or with whole value-chains related projects. Graduates' careers cover a large panel of profesional sectors in private and public institutions worldwide. Five possible international tracks are offered to the students through the semester 1 and semester 2 options. These five tracks have been designed so as to address specific needs of the job market in bioeconomy, with the following management and scientific activities:

    • Track 1: Bioproducts, green chemistry, biomass engineering: production of tailored plants and microorganisms to increase the sustainability of the value chains (adaptation of plant to climate change, preservation of biodiversity and food resources, etc.)
    • Track 2: Bioproducts, green chemistry, bioprocesses: design, optimization and up-scaling of processes for the production of bio-based molecules, combining fermentation and chemistry and taking into account the principle of green chemistry (in particular waste reduction)
    • Track 3: Bioproducts, green chemistry, materials, polymers: design and development of bioproducts and biomaterials in particular biodegradable materials, and exploiting the diversity of new structures
    • Track 4: Agro-resources, value-chain assessment, bioprocesses: design of new sustainable value chains and processes involving flexible multi-resources and multi-products biorefineries
    • Track 5: Agro-resources, value-chain assessment, materials, polymers: design of new sustainable value chains and products for bio-based materials, to substitute fossil-based solutions and create new products

    Thanks to their international experience and to the network of academic and socio-economic partners involved in the programme, the Bioceb graduates will be ensured career opportunities all over the world, in Research and Higher education organisations, as well as in private companies. They will more particularly access positions as:

    • Research scientist in chemical and biological engineering
    • Bioprocess / biomaterial / biocatalyst engineer
    • Research and Innovation Project manager
    • Business developer for Bio-based industries
    • Start-up manager

    After Bioceb, students have the possibility to undergo a doctoral training.

    Course Prerequisites

    The admission requirements for the M2 BEB  are the following:
    • BSc degree or equivalent degree of at least 180 ECTS in Engineering or Science including a strong background in at least one discipline related to Biology : Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biophysics, Bioprocess engineering, Molecular biology
    • Demonstrated English language proficiency B2 advanced.

    The candidates are selected based on their background, academic results, and motivation (alignment between the personal professional project and the M2 BEB program).

    Rythme de la formation
    Courses during 1st semester (Sept-Jan), then MSc thesis internship during 2nd semester (Feb-July/Aug).
    Internships and supervised projects
    • 1 project in a group of 4-5 students carried out throughout the 1st semester, which includes analysis of scientific literature, lab work, interculturality workshops, preparation for the personal professional project, and project management training;
    • 1 mandatory intership of 5-6 months.
