The goal of this course is to introduce students to the domain of distributed algorithms and fault-tolerance, and present methods to deal with the above-mentioned challenges. It addresses in particular a major technique using replication to tolerate a bounded number of failures, by completely masking them.

Organisation générale et modalités pédagogiques

General course organization and teaching modalities:

The course lectures combine theoretical material together with illustrating examples and exercises.

The teaching is interactive, stimulating thinking and memorization.

Evaluation is based on homework and the final written exam.

Compétences

Competencies gained in the course:

Upon successful completion, students will have acquired the following competencies:

Understanding of how distributed systems can be modeled and being able to model such systems.

Ability to analyze algorithms for such systems: prove their correctness and evaluate their complexity.

Ability to design such algorithms while overcoming difficulties related to the geographical distribution of processes, network dynamics and failures

Familiarity with classical fault tolerance approaches.

Bibliographie

Bibliography:

“Distributed Algorithms”, N.
