Pedagogical objectives of the courses

In the current context of population growth and limited arable land and fossil resources, global food security remains a major challenge worldwide. Improving the production and use of plants and micro-organisms for food, feed, health, the environment or industry in a sustainable way will require creative research in which the scientists of tomorrow must be trained.

Thanks to recent advances in molecular biology, contemporary biology has seen the advent of "omics" approaches and the possibility to generate large-scale data at different levels of analysis from the genome, transcriptome, proteome, metabolome, epigenome and others. In this context, the so-called systems biology approach aims to integrate these multiple data, to model them and to come up with predictive models of biological behaviour.

The objective is to acquire a qualitative and quantitative vision of biological processes such as the dynamic interactions between components of a living system, and also between living systems in interaction with the environment dedicated to plants and microbial models.

The Master 1 "Plant and Microbial molecular Biology (PMB)" is part of this dynamic, by training a new generation of high-level scientists specialised in the most recent concepts of molecular biology through research at an international level...

Stages et projets encadrés

The programme includes several research training courses through internships and tutored projects:

- Unit « Adopt a data set » : During this course, students will be given a data set to analyse in depth. The teaching is based on active pedagogy, accompanied by a scientific tutor who will have his or her own dataset to be analysed.

- Unit “Teach System Biology” : his course adopts a reverse pedagogy approach in which the students themselves construct the course.

In each session, students will evaluate each other. The “teacher” will be evaluated on the basis of his 2-hour lecture while the “students” will be evaluated through the 1-hour tutorial.

- 3 weeks of lab rotations in different laboratories of our network.

- 8 weeks of internship during which students will be involved in a research project in a laboratory in Paris-Saclay or abroad.

Students will also be strongly encouraged to participate in the International IGEM (International Genetically Ingeneering Machine) competition in which the University of Paris-Saclay participates.

Modalités pédagogiques particulières

Combination of fundamental courses, active pedagogical approaches and training through research.

Informations complémentaires

Scholarships

There are several ways in which students can be helped financially when they come to France.

Masters Scholarships from the University Paris Saclay

Candidates for International tracks (2 years) with outstanding records will be allowed to apply to the Idex Scholarship program from the Paris-Saclay University.

Please note that if you want to be considered for an Idex Scholarship, your application has to be validated at the latest on the end of May 2024.

SPS Scholarships for Master students

The Saclay Plant Sciences network (SPS) offers limited scholarships for students enrolled in the teaching programs in its perimeter, which includes the International Master 1 “Plant and Microbial molecular Biology”.

Up to 10 scholarships will be allocated each year on the basis of academic excellence, as judged from their past records.

The successful candidates will receive 8000 euros

The students who are awarded a SPS scholarship in M1 and who are accepted in M2 will automatically be awarded the scholarship in M2.

Applications must be submitted online before mid June, 2024 (midnight).

Other Stipends Call

A few other options may be consider depending on the country of origin.
Students may inquire with the French Embassy or any other organism in their country.
Students may visit maBourse.fr and the Campus France Grant Search Engine to find other Scholarship programs available.

Compétences
  • By combining fundamental courses, active pedagogical approaches and training through research within our network of laboratories of excellence, students will learn how to combine modelling and experimental approaches in challenging domain of plant sciences and microbiology.

At the end of the program, students will be able to :

    • Identify and describe current concepts of biology applied to plant and microbial systems.
    • Apply a research approach in the study of plant and microbial systems.
    • Experiment and practice under laboratory conditions and produce knowledge.
    • Analyse, inventory and interpret data and knowledge in order to produce a synthesis and explain it orally and/or in writing. Collaborate and intervene within a group.
Débouchés de la formation

International track in France combines a Master 1 (1 year) program for English-speaking students with the international M2 programs (1 year) thaught in English, offered by the Master of Integrative Biology and Physiology of the University Paris-Saclay:

M2  Plant Sciences

- M2  System and Synthetic Biology

- M2 Biomass Engineering for Bioeconomy

Perspectives

The vocation of the M1 PMB is to orient students primarily towards the Master 2 'Plant Sciences' and 'Systems and Synthetic Biology', at the end of which they can continue on to a doctorate to access the professions of researcher and teacher-researcher, in the academic sectors but not only.

As for those who do not go on to a doctorate, they pursue their careers either as engineers in the academic sector or in private biotechnology companies, the pharmaceutical industry, plant breeding companies or even create their own start-up. The fields of technology watch and scientific communication are also employment sectors accessible to our graduates.

The pluridisciplinary Master 1 PMB program is composed of two semesters of study divided into 4 parts for a total of 60 ECTS. It is part of so-called "active" teaching practices, by favouring the dynamic participation of students and encouraging tutoring.

Part 1: Fundamentals in Biology and Statistics (8 ECTS)

During the first part of the program, students will take fundamentals courses in Biology and Statistics in order to follow a refresher course  in fundamentals concepts of plant physiology, symbiosis and pathogenicity, basic genetics, genome editing and intermediate statistics.

Part 2 : Systems and Synthetic Biology (22 ECTS)

A set of courses that address key concepts and challenges in basic fields of Systems and Synthetics Biology applied to Microbial and Plant Sciences.

  • The teach system biology project
  • Systems biology I and II
  • Cellular economics
  • Synthetic Biology
  • Adopt a gene or a data set

Part 3: Specialty courses (12 ECTS)

  • How to build a plant? (Elective)
  • Microbial and Plant specialized metabolites (Elective)
  • Workshop on Plant / Microbe interactions
  • Genome Engineering

Part 4: Training by research (18 ECTS)

The most important part of the programme which is based on training through research embedded in the laboratories alongside our research teams.

By choosing their host laboratories within our Paris-Saclay University network, or internationally, students will be able to build their own research career and can develop individual research trajectories.

  • Lab rotations

During the second semester, students have the possibility of performing laboratory rotations for a period of 3 weeks in lab partners.

  • Research project and lab intership

During the second semester, students will be tutored in a teaching unit leading to the conception of a research project that will be undertaken during an 8-week internship in a host scientific laboratory. This training provides students with an ideal opportunity to prepare for a career in research (in both academic and private settings).

International track in France combines a Master 1 program for English-speaking students with any of the international M2 programs offered by the Master of Life Science and Health.
