Joint courses offered by the doctoral college are transversal across all disciplinary or thematic sectors of all the doctoral schools. These mainly aim to prepare the professional future of PhD graduates and optimise their international prospects by developing their language skills.

In 2015-16, the offer of joint, transversal PhD courses mainly consists of a combination of the catalogues of each Université Paris-Saclay member or associate institution. This offer is in the process of being reshaped into a programme focusing on career prospects, each organised by a group of institutions, particularly positioned in specific categories of prospective careers in order to obtain the best know-how from each of these and offer PhD students a well-rounded programme, which each institution on its own would not be able to provide (see the "Doctoral Programme Course" call for projects).

Université Paris-Saclay has identified the following categories of professional careers for which their PhD students may prepare themselves:

  • Researcher or lecturer-researcher in academia
  • Instructor in higher education or lecturer-researcher
  • In-company researcher, private sector R&D
  • Supporting and accompanying research, innovation, promotion and development of spin-offs
  • Entrepreneur in innovative sectors
  • Leader in research and innovation, managing innovative projects, leading innovative structures
  • Consultant, conducting studies and expertise in companies providing intellectual property services, international organisations, regional authorities and civil service, and prospective and strategic expertise within companies
  • Scientific mediator, scientific communications and journalism, scientific publications and international relations

For each of these career paths, the doctoral programme aims to:

  • provide an overview of the sector and how it is organised, national and international careers in the sector, distribution of jobs and how to achieve them;
  • provide joint courses that aim to help PhD students develop their skills and are most likely to be useful and ensure graduates will be competitive in their chosen sectors and careers;
  • identify the contexts in which PhD students can develop or consolidate these skills during the time spent preparing their theses, either in their research activities or in complimentary activities (teaching or mediation experiences, etc.).

In order to promote the skills they have that are relevant to their future career, PhD students, are advised to list their professional skills using terms that are coherent with those used in professional fields (DocPro).
