Ying Cheng is responsible of the annual update and new development of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (aka “Shanghai Ranking”). On October 19th, he visited the cluster of Université Paris-Saclay.

Ying Cheng is an Associate Professor and the Executive Director of Center for World-Class Universities at Graduate School of Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). He has been responsible for the annual update and new development of the Academic Ranking of World Universities. He also conducted the first Ranking of Top Universities in Greater China in 2011 and Best Chinese Universities Ranking in 2015. 

During his visit, Ying Cheng has discovered the cluster for education, research and innovation of Université Paris-Saclay. Among others, he visited the Apollon Laser facility, which will be the most powerful laser in the world ; Neurospin, one of the major institutes of biomedical imaging and neuroscience in the campus of UPSaclay; and the CNRS - Thales joint physics laboratory, whose research is centered on signal processing and electronics. He also had the opportunity to be acquainted with the achievements in the construction of this world-class University (common Masters and Doctorates, departments coordinating research units, UPSaclay Initiatives for improving technologies transfer and entrepreneurship, etc.).
In 2016, three members of Université Paris-Saclay were ranked in the Shanghai ranking : Paris-Sud University (46),  École polytechnique (between 301 and 400) and Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (between 401 and 500).

The day before, PSL (Research University Paris) invited Dr. Ying Cheng, as well as experts from the Leiden ranking, and the higher education expert of the World Bank Jamil Salmi, for a workshop entitled : “Positioning top French Higher Education institutions in the international landscape of world-class universities” which addressed the issue of the ranking of French academic groupings.
