Gilles Bloch has been elected President of Université Paris-Saclay by the ComUE Board Directors today (10th of June 2015). He is taking over from Dominique Vernay, who has been holding this position since January 2015. Gilles Bloch will also be President of the Paris-Saclay Foundation for Scientific Cooperation, which coordinates Operation Campus and the Idex (Excellence Initiative) project.

Université Paris-Saclay is a community of universities and institutions (ComUE) as defined in the 22nd of July 2013 Act. It was created by decree on 29th of December 2014 and brings together the 18 founding members who, together, are taking forward this world-class university project.

The governance of Université Paris-Saclay, in accordance with its statutes, is overseen by a Board of Directors comprising 26 members: 10 who were elected during a process which took place from 4 to 13 May 2015, 10 representatives from the founding institutions, 2 representatives from industry, 2 representatives from local authorities and 2 individual members, named by the founding members. The President is elected from within the Board of Directors.

During the meeting of 10th June, Mr Gilles Bloch put himself forward for election.

As a reminder, on 19th December 2014, Gilles Bloch had announced his candidacy and had been chosen by the founding members as an individual member who would later be called to put himself forward for election as President of Université Paris-Saclay.

Today’s vote has confirmed this choice and Gilles Bloch has been elected with 21 votes, 3 abstentions and 1 non-participating to the vote for 25 members present and represented, for a term of four years renewable once.

In his manifesto, Gilles Bloch presented his vision for the next five to ten years, insisting in particular on the new “work programs to maintain the University’s momentum towards further integration, with a view to improving collective effectiveness to serve research, education and technology transfer”.

He also highlighted the crucial complementarity “between the Université Paris-Saclay leadership and its Academic Council [I think it is] vital to draw all the added value from this large reservoir of ideas and proposals and to harness its ability to benefit from the work undertaken by the ComUE leadership”.

The setting up of the governance bodies is currently on-going, with the election of the Academic Council’s 220 members. The Council has a consultative role for the transfer of authority to Université Paris-Saclay, in particular regarding education, the shared project and the multi-annual contract.
