Elsa Jungman: a graduate from Université Paris-Saclay in Vogue US

Alumni Article published on 13 April 2021 , Updated on 28 April 2021

Last month, Vogue US gave centre stage to the work of Elsa Jungman, a graduate from Université Paris-Saclay. In an article on facial skin microbiome, otherwise known as skin flora, the American magazine recommended one of the flagship products from Elsa’s start-up.

Healthy skin is far from being perfectly clean. Like the gut, the skin has its very own unique ecosystem of bacteria and fungi. Keeping it in balance is essential for maintaining a hydrated and glowing complexion. Our skin microbiome refers to trillions of bacteria that live in the different layers of our skin. A healthy or balanced skin microbiome is like a diverse rainforest – the more strains there are that coexist, the healthier the skin!

While research on skin microbiome is still in its early stages, it has led to a whole new understanding of skin biology, and inspired Elsa Jungman. There has been a paradigm shift in the way we care for our skin, resulting in the creation of healthier products that work in symbiosis with the skin and its microbiome.

Our modern lifestyles, including our diets, excessive hygiene routines, skincare products and the fact that we are less exposed to nature, have all reduced our microbial diversity. This makes us more susceptible to dryness, overproduction of sebum, rashes, acne, redness, loss of skin elasticity, uneven skin tones and wrinkles.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an ultra-hygienic atmosphere that has raised questions about the way our skin and environment interact. The places we visit are increasingly more and more sterilised; we touch our faces with hands that have been scrubbed with soap or disinfected with hand sanitiser; and above all, the wearing of masks that are in direct contact with our skin has become widespread. This shift in routines and habits means that we need to take better care of ourselves!

Some of the tips recommended by Vogue US for healthy skin include: adopt a ‘less is more’, minimalist approach that avoids using too many products; use night creams that have all night to work; and avoid skin scrubs, exfoliants and spin brushes which are terrible for sensitive skin. Better yet, choose a certified skincare brand that is microbiome-friendly, just like the Dr. Elsa Jungman brand!

Elsa Jungman graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Université Paris-Saclay where she obtained a PhD in Analytical Chemistry, specialising in dermal absorption. Elsa has reinvented dermocosmetics in San Francisco with her start-up, Dr. Elsa Jungman. Her business venture has led to her being ranked among the top “100 French stars in the Silicon Valley” by the magazine Challenges. Elsa was also awarded the French American Entrepreneurship Award by the Club600.

Dr. Elsa Jungman offers a range of cosmetics for people with sensitive skin that addresses consumers directly rather than pharmacists or dermatologists. Dr. Elsa Jungman also incorporates the ELSI Method™, which promotes self-care with facial yoga.

Elsa Jungman shares her expertise with her community via her Instagram page and on her website, where all of her products can be found.
