The sex chromosomes revealed through a new sequencing technique

A new sequencing technique reveals the secrets of the sex chromosomes of a mushroom. It was very difficult to decipher the complete sequence of sex chromosomes because of the large number of repeated elements they contain. For the first time, thanks to a particularly promising new sequencing technique, an international team including researchers from the  Laboratoire Ecologie, Systématique et Evolution /Laboratory of Ecology, Systematics and Evolution (ESE -CNRS / Université Paris-Sud) came to obtain the complete sequence of the sex chromosomes a flowers pathogenic fungus : the Microbotryum lychnidis dioicae. These sex chromosomes show hundreds of chromosomal rearrangements and loss of hundreds of genes on either chromosome.

These revelations lead to new questions: what are the evolutionary forces at work in these amazing genomic regions and why the sex chromosomes contain such large areas unable to recombine?.
