The doctoral school
PHENIICS (ED N° 576) is the doctoral school of Ile-de-France centered around the themes of subatomic physics. PHENIICS spans the fundamental to applied sciences, and is rooted in the unique network of world-renowed research institutes on these themes situated in the University of Paris-Saclay.
PHENIICS aims to accompany the doctoral student through the transition from an academic background to the beginning of a career in business, administration, higher education, and public research. Throughout the three years of the PhD program, the main goals of the doctoral school are to:
- attract the top students to scientific programs of PHENIICS
- guarantee a positive PhD experience and serve as an intermediary between the student and their thesis advisor or research team
- help each student work to their academic highest potential, notably through access to the wider network of professors and researchers of the doctoral school
- provide opportunities for building a professional network through seminars, invited professors, national and international conferences, student congresses, meetings with industry recruters and alumni, etc
- foster the development of a well-rounded scientific culture by encouraging interdisciplinary interactions among research groups under the PHENIICS umbrella of subjects
- encourage interaction with the international research community at the highest level
- develop the skills necessary for career development;
- prepare students for quick placement after graduation in the best industry and academic instutions
To attain these goals, the doctoral school aims for synergy between research institutes and pedagogical opportunities. PHENIICS benefits from the close proximity of numerous world-renowed academic and research institutes within the perimeter of Paris-Saclay that come together in the doctoral program. The academic excellence of PHENIICS is rooted in the diversity of ways in which science is explored: from fundamental theory to appliciations and societal implications, through academic courses and hands-on research. A strong collaboration exists among the engineering schools, institutes, and University of Paris-Sud, leading to an academic offering rich in interdisciplinary themes and real-world training that serves the diverse collection of students and institutes in the PHENIICS family. Exchanges among the doctoral and engineering schools are particularly fostered in the areas of instrumentation, accelerator, and nuclear physics, to profit from the complementary expertises in fundamental and applied sciences in these domains.
The Scope of the Doctoral School
The scientific domains of PHENIICS include particle physics, nuclear physics, cosmology and astrophysics, nuclear energy, and theoretical physics particularly where there is a strong dialog with experiment (phenomenology, quantum field theory, gravitation, the N-body problem, etc). A vibrant instrumentation program covers accelerator and detector physics, including simulations and optimization. The applications and societal aspects of these domains, like radiochemistry and medical imaging, round out the PHENIICS offering and provide a multifaceted educational experience for the doctoral students of the University of Paris-Saclay.
To develop synergies among the various expertises present at Paris-Saclay, the doctoral school is backed by six research institutes (UMR) from the University of Paris-Sud, two from École Polytechnique, the four divisions of CEA, and two research units of the IRSN. The University of Paris-Sud, the CEA, and the École Polytechnique are each co-responsibles of the doctoral school.

The PHENIICS doctoral school encompasses all the grand laboratories of subatomic physics (IPN, Irfu, LAL, and LLR) of which the respective research programs are highly complementary including theory, experiment, cosmology, instrumentation, imaging, radiochemistry, radioprotection, nuclear fuel cycles, and accelerator physics. The identity of the doctoral school is rooted in these subjects centered around the theme of subatomic physics and cojointly explored by the University, CEA-Saclay, and Ecole Polytechnique.

The ED Council
The PHENIICS council brings together the principal actors from the various ED laboratories, as well as local business leaders, other doctoral school and student representatives.

There are two important yearly events for the PHENIICS community.
- The presentation of the doctoral school for first year PhD students. This event normally takes place in November.
- The annual PHENIICS Fest, a conference organized by PHENIICS students for PHENIICS students. Everyone is invited to attend and contribute through posters and talks. This year's event will be held May 30-31st, at the Linear Accelerator Laboratory on the campus of Paris-Sud. The website for this year's event may be found here. Check back soon for more info!
PHENIICS ED Award
The doctoral school gives a thesis award to a maximum of 10% of graduating students each year. Each laureate receives a prize of 1000 euros.
The winners are decided by the ED council during their March meeting.
The prizes are awarded during the annual ED conference, normally held in April or May.
The thesis must have been defended during the previous year.
For 2017, the prizes will be awarded in 2018.
Students wishing to apply for a PhD at PHENIICS may participate in the early and/or normal competition. The early competition regroups a select set of thesis subjects and offers early response for these priority subjects. The normal competition includes the ensemble of available thesis topics that were not included or not filled during the early competition. Details about these competitions and the application process may be found under the pages at left.
Early Competition 2017
A selected number of thesis subjects are offered in an early round of competition.
Candidates may apply for these topics through the end of February 2017.
Once a candidate's application has been approved by the thesis director, the doctoral school will then proceed, in mid-March, to select students for an interview.
Candidates will be informed by mid-March whether they have been selected for an interview.
The interview process will take place at the end of March 2017. The preliminary results of this early competition are released at the beginning of April.

The normal application process is open through the end of May 2017.
Once the candidate's application has been approved by the thesis director, the doctoral school then proceeds at the beginning of June with a selection of candidates for the interview process.

About the Competition
Two rounds of competition are held: the early competition and normal competition.
As a first step, regardless of the competition, all applications should be filed through ADUM under the desired subject(s). Please make sure to include the following documents, preferably in a single pdf document uploaded to ADUM:
- A CV
- Grades from L3/university, and first and second years of master's program (as much as available)
- A description of the proposed thesis subject
- A paragraph on why you want to pursue this topic
- A paragraph from the thesis director describing the research program to be pursued during the thesis
If you are selected for the interview process, please send one or two letters of recommendation to the PHENIICS secretary (you will be reminded about this in an email).
The tentative calendar is as follows :
Early Competition :
- Beginning of December : The application process opens for a selection of highlighted thesis topics.
- End of February : The application period closes.
- March : Interviews with selected candidates are conducted by the doctoral school - results will be given shortly after the interview process.
Normal Competition :
- Mid-April : The application process opens for all PHENIICS thesis topics.
- End of May : The application period closes.
- Beginning of June : Preliminary selection of candidates is made by the doctoral school.
- End of June : Interviews with selected candidates are conducted by the doctoral school - results will be given shortly after the interview process.
The principal evaluation critera is the preparedness of the candidate with respect to the thesis subject and the research group.
The goal of the interview process is to complete and clarify the information provided on the written application. Interview questions may include but are not limited to the subject of the thesis, the research plan, the academic background, or any information that may allow the doctoral school to understand the motivation and professional goals of the candidate.
The jury is composed of members of the PHENIICS administration and members of the ED council to obtain a diverse scientific body.

Finance a Thesis
A doctoral thesis may be financed by multiple means. In fact, more than half of the PHENIICS doctoral students are financed by contracts other than those provided through the ED competition.
Below is a schematic listing of possible financing options. It is the responsibility of the research group proposing the thesis to anticipate any external funding demands.
It is recommended to consider financing options ideally as early as one year from the starting date of the thesis. The list below is indicative of the types of possible funding sources, but the ED cannot guarantee that these sources are available each year.

Registration for the 2016-2017 academic year was opened 06/07/2016. The registration procedure is described below.
To register, first please connect to your account through:
Once connected to ADUM,
- Click the button for registration.
- Start the procedure for academic registration (inscription pédagogique).
- Fill out the online form with your personal and professional information. Note that certain fields are required to proceed with the registration process.
- Upload to ADUM a pdf containing copies of all the required documents (the signed annual progress report is not necessary at this stage). Make sure to keep the originals which may be needed for verification later.
- Click to finish the registration process, a button which will only be active once all the required fields are filled.
- Print the registration authorisation (autorisation d’inscription), the academic report (dossier de scolarité), and the training agreement (convention de formation), partially filled by ADUM. In the training agreement, the training roadmap (article 3) shall be filled with the courses you would like to follow during your thesis (see the tabs "Doctorate advancement" and "Courses" ).

- At the end of the thesis, if the defense will take place after September 1st, it is necessary to re-register at no cost (details may be found here).
Finally, all students must :
- Obtain the requested signatures on the registration authorization form (formulaire d’autorisation d’inscription)
- Then schedule a meeting with your PHENIICS representative for the admission or re-registration interview, at which time you will obtain the remaining necessary signatures. Please come to this interview with all your documents already signed by your thesis director and laboratory director.
Once you have obtained all the necessary signatures on the registration authorisation form, the doctoral terms, and the registration application, you must make an appointment at your academic instistution, which is either:
- The University of Paris Sud if your laboratory is part of Paris-Sud, the CEA, or IRSN.
- The Graduate School of l'Ecole Polytechnique if your laboratory is part of Ecole Polytechnique (Contact: Audrey Lemaréchal)
Each student, as a function of their corresponding laboratory, has a specified PHENIICS representative (member of the ED administration). This representative handles registration, oversees the thesis progress with respect to the ED requirements, and helps coordinate the thesis defense. Student Teaching Opportunities
PHENIICS students may participate in teaching experiences during their thesis. More information about these and other non-research activities may be found here.
Basic requirements for a PHENIICS PhD
Five « modules » (at least) during the 3 years :
- The PHENIICS MOOC
- One lecture for professional insertion (see catalogue)
- One scientific lecture on one of the doctoral school topics (from PHENIICS or from another ED/M2)
- One school (école Jolio-Curie, école de Gif, école du CERN, … ) or one teaching duty
- One other module : scientific lecture or professional training
Exception: For students doing an international cotutelle who spend at least half of their time outside of their PHENIICS laboratory, the number of mandatory modules is reduced to three :
- The PHENIICS MOOC
- One lecture for professional insertion (see catalogue)
- One scientific lecture on one of the doctoral school topics given by the ED or by an ED that is part of the same group as PHENIICS, like STEPUP or A&A

The PHENIICS doctoral school offers seven scientific courses on PHENIICS topics, a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), as well as interdisciplinary and professional development courses at Paris-Saclay. Students also have access to selected courses offered by other doctoral schools and local institutes.
Registration and declaration of courses is done through ADUM.
It is also possible to have other courses of your choice validated as a PHENIICS formation. Requests of this type may be made through your PHENIICS representative who will determine whether the course's subject and hours permit its validation.
