M2 Laser Optics Matter

The Master "Laser optical material" (LOM) addresses the major areas of optics, light-matter interaction and properties of matter (atoms, molecules, solids, plasmas). It focuses on the nonlinear aspects of physics (lasers, nonlinear electromagnetism) and on the quantum properties of matter interacting with light.

The program addresses both fundamental, theoretical and experimental aspects, and applications. The program is constructed on a common core (from September to December) to allow students to take in a second period (Jan-February) more specific elective courses in major areas such as ultra-intense lasers and X-ray sources, nanophotonics and optoelectronics, atomic and molecular physics, quantum optics, biophysics, imaging ... the second semester is devoted to an internship with a minimum duration of 4 months.

Course Prerequisites

The required level is an M1 in Physics, or equivalent. This study path is open to 2nd-year engineering students who wish to do an M2 in their 3rd year. Addressing notions of fundamental physics, students will deepen their knowledge in the field of optics and on the properties of recording media. The programme is also open to international students who have already completed 2 semesters in equivalent studies abroad.

  • Understand and use specialised physics knowledge with the requisite scientific rigour.

  • Seek information and carry out research on a scientific issue by knowing how to identify relevant sources of information

  • Use conceptual, methodological, numerical, technical and practical skills and knowledge to model and solve problems in physics or related subjects.

  • Conceptualise, structure and independently conduct a project in physics and produce a critical analysis of the results.

  • Adapt to a new environment, work as a team and collaborate to achieve common goals.

  • Summarise and communicate effectively in two languages including English, in a manner adapted to the target audience.

Post-graduate profile

This study path prepares students for a wide variety of different jobs: most go on to doctoral programmes (fundamental or applied physics, interface between physics and other disciplines) to embark on research or research and development careers, or go into third-cycle teaching posts. Some will become executives in the private sector, while others will work as study or research engineers in public organisations. Yet others will work for companies that require high-level scientific knowledge and skills.

Career prospects
  • The programme is mainly intended to lead to a thesis, and 75% of students in this M2 go down this route. Over 200 Internship/thesis subjects are offered each year to students on the course.
  • The other main opening is in Research and Development (R&D) professions: development of lasers, design of optical instruments, image processing, security, microelectronics, telecommunications, materials for optics, large instruments, optoelectronics components and systems optoelectronics, etc. All these fields fall within the scope of the activities of large groups such as Thales, Sagem, ESSILOR, L'Oréal, Alcatel-Lucent, Saint Gobain, Quantel, STMicro, not to mention ONERA, CNES, CEA (Laser MegaJoule , LETI), and so on.

Le premier semestre est constitué de 3 groupes d'ECTS à choix : Options A, Options B et Options C. Le nombre minimal d'ECTS à acquérir dans chaque groupe est de 6 ECTS pour les groupes A et B, et de 9 ECTS pour le groupe C. Les choix opérés doivent permettre d'obtenir 30 ECTS dans le semestre. L'ouverture de chaque UE est conditionnée au nombre d'étudiants inscrits.
