Objectives

The objective of this program is to offer top-level training in nanoscience. It relies on the skills available in Paris-Saclay's laboratories as well as on existing technological platforms. It is an ambitious program that helps students structure their way of working, with three possible options:
• Nanophysics,
• Nanodevices and Nanotechnologies
• International track in nanoscience (in English)
with different approaches based on fundamental physics, applied physics, information science and technologies and Nano bioscience.
Graduates can seek a career in areas that are strongly related to nanoscience and emerging technologies:
• academic staff,
• research and development engineer in optics, nanoelectronics, matter, biosciences, biotechnologies, health...
After PhD graduation, doctors can continue as post-doc in an academic lab (45%) or valve their experience as engineer of research for in companies or organizations as ONERA (40%). About 14% get a permanent academic position.

Course Prerequisites

1st year of Master 1 in Physics or Electronics Good knowledge of electromagnetism and condensed matter physics (quantum mechanics, statistical physics)

Skills
  • Understand and use specialised nanosciences knowledge with the requisite scientific rigour.

  • Be able to analyse a scientific article or presentation and grasp its underlying issues as well as its limits.

  • Use conceptual, methodological, numerical, technical and practical knowledge and skills for modelling and solving problems in physics or engineering, or at the junction of both disciplines.

  • Build knowledge through a scientific approach.

  • Adapt to a new environment, work as a team and collaborate to achieve common goals.

  • Summarise and communicate effectively in two languages including English, in a manner adapted to the target audience.

Post-graduate profile

Most graduates (79 %) go on to do a thesis, either in an academic or in an industrial research laboratory, for instance under a CIFRE contract. Slightly over half of such theses are carried out in Paris-Saclay laboratories. 12 % are done abroad. Other former students prefer to join a company directly as engineers (12 %). 5 % opt for further studies, other than a thesis, changing to a different topic.

79 % of the graduates choose to continue as PhD students. Among those, 54 % work in a lab in the Paris-Saclay area, 13 % elsewhere in the Paris region, 21 % in other French regions, and 12 % abroad. Funding is distributed among contracts attributed by doctoral schools, research contracts obtained by the host teams or the mixed Finance and Industry ministry (CIFRE thesis). 12 % of the graduates are hired as engineers directly after the M2. Others pursue further studies, other than a thesis.

Career prospects

This specialisation is oriented towards professions that are highly associated with the field of nanosciences and technologies:
* researcher and university lecturer,
* research and development engineer in the field of optics, nanoelectronics, materials, biosciences, biotechnologies, health, etc.
Students trained in this programme will be able to continue their studies to prepare for a doctoral programme in an academic or industrial research laboratory, for instance under a CIFRE contract.

Programme

1er semestre composé de :
* 2 UE de tronc commun
* 8 UE obligatoires réparties en 3 paquets possibles associées à des options de spécialisation (nanophysique, nanodispositifs et nanotechnologies ou international track in nanosciences)
* 2 UE optionnelles à choisir parmi une liste
Toutes ces UE sont à 3 ECTS.
