Retour sur le voyage immersif à la Silicon Valley, pour les lauréats du Challenge Start-up

Les lauréats du Challenge Start-up 2021-2022 se sont envolés pour la Silicon Valley, pour une semaine immersive dans l'écosystème entrepreneurial américain. Les étudiants entrepreneurs témoignent en racontant les étapes de voyage, jour par jour.

Jour 1 - Dimanche 27 février 2022
Arrivée à San Francisco, tourisme et repos

Partis de Paris vers 11h00, nous sommes presque tous bien arrivés sur le sol américain vers 14h00 (heure locale) ! Un membre du groupe s’est malheureusement fait bloqué pendant plus de 4h à la douane... Nous avons été accueilli par Valérie MILLET, notre guide-interprète et coordinatrice logistique pour le séjour, qui a commencé par nous faire visiter la ville en bus, en contemplant des lieux typiques de la ville : Twins Peaks avec une belle vue en hauteur sur la ville, le Golden Gate Park, le Golden Gate Bridge… Pour terminer cette première journée, nous avons été dîner au Capurro's Restaurant, the San Francisco Fish House, en compagnie de Katie RENATI, notre tour opératrice.

Leaving from Paris around 11am, we almost all arrived on American soil around 2pm (local time) ! A member of the group unfortunately got blocked for more than 4 hours at customs… We were welcomed by Valérie MILLET, our tour director and logistics coordinator for the journey, who started by showing us around the city by bus, contemplating typical places of the city : Twins Peaks with a beautiful high view of the city, the Golden Gate Park, the Golden Gate Bridge... To end this first day, we had dinner at Capurro's Restaurant, the San Francisco Fish House, with Katie RENATI, our tour operator.

Jour 2 - Lundi 28 février 2022
Introduction et entraînement aux pitchs

La matinée fût centrée sur des entraînements au pitch. Katie RENATI nous a introduit l'écosystème de la Silicon Valley puis nous a donné plusieurs tips pour améliorer nos pitchs devant les futurs investisseurs, partenaires, etc. Plusieurs d’entre nous sont ensuite allés déjeuner au Aquatic Park Cove. L’après-midi, deux entrepreneuses sont venues échanger avec le groupe et raconter leurs expériences : Helena Merk, Co-founder & CEO de Glimpse (acquise pas Twine) et Elsa Jungman, Founder & CEO de ELSI Skin Health. Le soir, nous sommes allés dîner au Bubba Gump : beaucoup de références au film Forrest Gump, de partout !

The morning was focused on pitches training. Katie RENATI introduced the Silicon Valley ecosystem and then gave us several tips to improve our pitches in front of future investors, partners... Most of us went for lunch at the Aquatic Park Cove. In the afternoon, two women entrepreneurs came to share their experiences : Helena Merk, Co-founder & CEO of Glimpse (acquired by Twine) and Elsa Jungman, Founder & CEO of ELSI Skin Health. In the evening, we had dinner at the Bubba Gump : so many references to the Forrest Gump movie, everywhere !

Jour 3 - Mardi 1er mars 2022
Rencontres professionnelles et pitchs

Le matin, nous sommes allés au Consulat Général de France à San Francisco, où nous avons rencontré Jean-Baptiste BORDES, attaché pour la science et la technologie, ainsi que Florence TISON, directrice d’activité pour Business France dont l’un des rôles est d’aider les entreprises françaises à s'implanter aux États-Unis. Leurs présentations ont été très enrichissantes et nous ont fait comprendre à quel point la Silicon Valley est un écosystème business à part. Un des chiffres marquants : "Quand 1 milliard est investi en France, 45 milliards sont investis à la Silicon Valley…".

On the morning, we went to the French Consulate in San Francisco, where we met Jean-Baptiste BORDES,  science and technology attaché, and Florence TISON, managing director of Business France, whose role is to help French companies to set up in the United States. Presentations were very enriching and made us understand how Silicon Valley is a unique business ecosystem. One of the most important figures : "When 1 billion is invested in France, 45 billion are invested in Silicon Valley...".

L’après-midi, nous sommes allés à la rencontre de Carlos Dias, un serial entrepreneur. Nous l’avons rejoint au Golden Gate Park où il nous a partagé son expérience et sa vision, en insistant sur le Mindset Silicon Valley qui est à l’origine de la réussite de cette région (Silicon Valley is not a place, it is a mindset). Une fois sa présentation terminée, il a challengé nos pitchs. Chaque équipe a recueilli des conseils précieux pour le futur de sa start-up. Certains commentaires sont souvent revenus, comme "l’importance de la vision" et "ne pas essayer de faire mieux mais faire différent". Il a conclu notre échange en nous rappelant le but unique du pitch, qui est d'éveiller l'intérêt de notre interlocuteur et de décrocher un deuxième entretien avec lui.

In the afternoon, we met Carlos Dias, a serial entrepreneur. We joined him in Golden Gate Park where he shared his experience and his vision with us, insisting on the Silicon Valley Mindset which is at the origin of the success of this region (Silicon Valley is not a place, it is a mindset). Once his presentation was over, he challenged our pitches. Each team got valuable advice for the future of their startup. Some of the comments that came up often were "the importance of vision" and "not trying to do better but doing different". He concluded the exchange by reminding us the unique goal of a pitch, which is to arouse the interest of our interlocutor and get a second interview with him.

Jour 4 - Mercredi 2 mars 2022
Université de Berkeley

La journée débutant dans le fameux “fog” de San Francisco, nous sommes partis pour l’Université de Berkeley. Nous avons été accueilli par Ricardo RODRIGUEZ, Global Programs Coordinator of the UC Berkeley Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology. Nous avons échangé avec des personnes de l’écosystème “startup” de l’université dont des étudiants devant qui nous avons également pitché nos projets. L'après-midi, toujours sur le campus de Berkeley, nous avons échangé sur divers sujets très intéressants avec Satya Goncho A. Goncho, chercheuse en astrophysique. Elle nous a rappelé l’importance de bien soigner nos pitchs et notre image, même dans la vie de tous les jours, pour ne pas manquer une opportunité.

Starting the day in the famous fog of San Francisco, we went to the University of Berkeley. We were welcomed by Ricardo RODRIGUEZ, Global Programs Coordinator of the UC Berkeley Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology. Then, we spoke with people from the university’s startup ecosystem, including students in front of whom we also pitched our projects. Also on the Berkeley campus, in the afternoon, we discussed various very interesting topics with Satya Goncho A. Goncho, astrophysics researcher. She reminded us the importance of taking care of our pitches and our image, even in everyday life, in order not to miss opportunities.

Jour 5 - Jeudi 3 mars 2022
Networking et Université de Stanford

Le jeudi matin, nous avons pris le bus pour la Silicon Valley. Nous avons effectué notre premier arrêt à l'accélérateur BootUp World. Ici encore, nous avons pitché devant Luigi BAJETTIUN, Founder & General Partner de Lombard Ventures, qui nous a fait des retours rapides mais intéressants. Investisseur en pré-seed, il nous a donné son secret pour réussir ses investissements : “la chose la plus importante est l’équipe”. Ensuite, nous avons assisté à un cours d'entrepreneuriat dispensé par Mukul AGARWAL, Founder & CEO de BootUp World. Ce que nous en retiendrons est la règle des 5P : Purpose / Passion / Perseverance / Progress / Pivot, qui font le succès d’un entrepreneur. Il faut noter que 4 de ces 5P sont des mots français intégrés à la langue anglaise. Il n'y a donc aucune raison pour que les Américains soient de meilleurs entrepreneurs que les Français !

On Thursday morning, we went to Silicon Valley. We made our first stop at the BootUp World launchpad. Here again, we pitched in front of Luigi BAJETTIUN, Founder & General Partner of Lombard Ventures, investor who gave us quick but interesting feedback. He gave us his secret for successful investments : "the most important thing is the team".  Then, we assisted to an entrepreneurship course dispensed by Mukul AGARWAL, Founder & CEO of BootUp World. What we will remember is the 5P's rule : Purpose / Passion / Perseverance / Progress / Pivot that make the success of an entrepreneur. Important : 4 of these 5Ps are French words integrated into the English language. So there is no reason for Americans to be better entrepreneurs than the French !

Nous avons ensuite repris le bus en direction de Plug and Play, un des meilleurs incubateurs de la Silicon Valley qui a incubé, entre autres, Paypal et Google. Pendant le déjeuner, nous avons réalisé des speeds dating avec les personnes sur place pour nous entraîner à pitcher et rencontrer de potentiels investisseurs et associés. Dans la Silicon Valley, tout le monde est très ouvert et peut échanger avec des "inconnus". Ce comportement culturel associé à la forte concentration de talents créer une émulation d’où germe des idées puis des start-ups. C’est la principale raison du succès de la Silicon Valley. Après le déjeuner, nous avons participé à une séance de pitchs improvisée : 3 minutes pour pitcher devant une foule d'investisseurs, d'entrepreneurs, etc.
Pressés par le temps, nous sommes partis précipitamment pour l'Université de Stanford. Nous avons rejoint 6 ingénieurs français en fin d’études et 1 Alumni de l'Université Paris-Saclay actuellement Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator at Burlacot Lab. Tout en visitant le campus, nous avons pu échanger avec eux sur leur expérience en tant qu’étudiant à Stanford. Ils ont également été très intéressés par l’évolution de l'Université Paris Saclay, notre objectif à la Silicon Valley et nos projets entrepreneuriaux. Cette rencontre s’est terminée par la traditionnelle session de pitchs informelle !

Then, we took the bus back to Plug and Play, one of the best incubators in Silicon Valley which has incubated, among others, Paypal and Google. During lunch, we did speed dating with the people on site to practice pitching and meet potential investors and associates. In Silicon Valley, everyone is very open and can interact with anyone. This cultural behavior associated with the high concentration of talent creates an emulation from which germinates ideas and then start-ups. This is the main reason of the success of Silicon Valley. After lunch, we took part in an improvised pitching session : 3 minutes to pitch in front of a crowd of investors, entrepreneurs, etc.
Running out of time, we left hurriedly for Stanford University. There, we joined 6 French engineers at the end of their studies and 1 Alumni from Université Paris-Saclay currently Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator at Burlacot Lab. While visiting the campus, we exchanged with them about their experience as students in Stanford University. They were also very interested in the evolution of Université Paris-Saclay, our goal in Silicon Valley and our entrepreneurial projects. This meeting ended with a now traditional pitches session !

Jour 6 - Vendredi 4 mars 2022
Rencontre avec des Alumni de l'Université Paris-Saclay

Dernière journée à San Francisco ! Dans la matinée, nous avons pu échanger avec des Alumni de l'Université Paris-Saclay, qui sont passés de l’écosystème français à l’écosystème de San Francisco. Nous avons notamment rencontré :
- Ketan BACCHUWAR, diplômé d'un Master Applied Mathematics to Computer Vision and ML, désormais Co-founder and CTO at Crosscope
- Nicolas THIEBAUT, PhD en physique de l'ENS Paris-Saclay, désormais Machine Learning Engineer
- Omar YAMAK, diplômé en Biotechnologies de l'Université Paris-Saclay, désormais assistant de recherche au SFSU Bioelectronics Lab, MS SFSU
- Zélia SEVAUX, Pharm.D, MSc à l'Université Paris-Saclay, désormais Regulatory Intelligence Associate - US Product Development Regulatory à Genentech.
- Hortense BERTHOUX, diplômée d'un Master de l'Université Paris-Saclay, désormais employée chez Business France SF.

Last day in San Francisco ! In the morning we discussed with Université Paris-Saclay's Alumni who went from the French ecosystem to the San Francisco ecosystem. In particular, we encountered :

Jour 7 - Samedi 5 mars 2022
Départ

Nous avions une dernière matinée libre avant de partir pour l’aéroport aux alentours de 12h00. Certains en ont profité pour louer des vélos et aller au Gloden Gate Bridge, d'autres sont allés à la Coit Tower ou sont allés faire un dernier tour dans le quartier du Fisherman's Wharf dans lequel nous logions.

We had one last free morning before leaving for the airport around 12:00 p.m. Some of them took the opportunity to rent bikes and go to the Gloden Gate Bridge, others went to Coit Tower or went for a last lap in the Fisherman's Wharf area where we were staying.
